susan pui san lok is an artist and writer based in London. Her work explores notions of place, translation, nostalgia, migration and diaspora. Recent projects include Golden (solo exhibitions at Chinese Arts Centre, Manchester, and Beaconsfield, London, 2006); Arcade, Westbourne Studios, London, 2006; Cruel / Loving Bodies (Hong Kong Arts Centre, 2006; Shanghai Duolun MoMA and Beijing 798 Space, 2004); Reassurance (SPACE Triangle, London and Chinese Arts Centre, Manchester, 2005); Lightsilver (Beaconsfield, London, 2005); The Translator’s Notes (CafĂ© Gallery Projects, London, 2003); New Releases (Gallery 4A and AGNSW, Australia, 2001); and Cities On The Move (Hayward, London, 1999). Residencies include the Media Archive for Central England (MACE) as part of Necessary Journeys, an Arts Council England programme that took its cue from the BFI’s Black World initiative (launched 2005). The programme closed with an international symposium and book launch at Tate Modern (November, 2005). She was also selected for the first ‘Electric Greenhouse’, an Artquest / b3 media digital arts residency showcased at the ICA, London, 2005.
Publications include the artist’s books, Golden (Notes) (forthcoming) and NEWS essays in Journal of Visual Culture (2007, vol.6, no.1), David A. Bailey, Ian Baucom & Sonia Boyce eds. Shades of Black (2005), and Dennis Atkinson & Paul Dash eds. Social and Critical Practices in Art Education (2005); articles and reviews in the journals Third Text, parallax, a guest-edited issue of www.chinese-art.com [1998-2004], as well as various exhibition catalogue essays. She joined the Editorial Group of the Journal of Visual Culture in 2006 and has edited the forthcoming themed issue, ‘Notes for Hong Kong, and other Returns’, Journal of Visual Culture, vol.6, no.3, December 2007.
She is currently working on a Cornerhouse Bigger Picture commission, DIY Ballroom/Live, for Big Screen Manchester. DIY Ballroom/Live launched as part of Urban Screens Manchester, 11-14 October 2007, and will tour to partner venues in 2008. She is also working on a new touring commission for BFI Southbank Gallery and Film and Video Umbrella for 2008.
